About this document

This is the first annual report of the Natural Heritage Trust as required under section 43 of the Natural Heritage Trust of Australia Act 1997. It is a comprehensive document covering all aspects from establishment of the legislation to implementation of the suite of programs that, together, work towards the outcome of achieving the conservation, sustainable use and repair of Australia’s natural environment.

The Government has worked hard in establishing the Natural Heritage Trust to address the critical natural resource management issues facing Australia.The Trust is the largest single investment by a Commonwealth Government to address Australia’s major environmental and sustainable production problems.

The report highlights the significant steps taken to implement the Natural Heritage Trust in just over a year. The first significant event was the signing of the partnership agreements with all States and Territories.These agreements represent a fundamental shift in the Commonwealth/State relationship, establishing a clear framework for all jurisdictions to work in a more positive and integrated way than ever before towards management of Australia’s natural assets.
