About this document

The year to 30 June 2006 saw a further maturing of the Natural Heritage Trust in meeting its objectives in promoting and supporting biodiversity conservation, sustainable management of natural resources and community capacity-building and institutional change.

In the regional component, the foundations established by the earlier investment in people, partnerships and formulating clear strategic directions enabled Trust investments to focus more on ‘on-ground’ activities.

By 30 June 2006, there was growing evidence that the Natural Heritage Trust was making a difference on the ground at the point of investment. Many natural resource outcomes being pursued through the Trust are long-term, but we can be confident more goals will be met.

The Australian Government spent a total of $312.17 million during the year on activities ranging from projects focused on local environmental issues through the Envirofund to regional and national investment stream projects. Envirofund community projects received $20.92 million, regional projects $153.61 million and national projects $111.73 million.

The Trust investment by the Australian Government has been the catalyst for change across Australia in natural resource management. However, the true success of the Natural Heritage Trust stems from the involvement and commitment of communities, industry groups and volunteers throughout Australia to improving natural resource management. The future success of the Trust will be a product of the working partnerships established across jurisdictions to date and the landscape management approaches adopted at the regional, state and national scale in delivering the investment by all engaged.
