About this document
The Australian Government’s $3 billion Natural Heritage Trust is Australia’s largest ever environmental rescue package. Phase 1 of the Trust, which commenced in 1996-97 and concluded in 2001-2002 was funded primarily by the partial sale of Telstra, the Government owned telecommunications company.
The Trust sought to focus on on-ground activities, and funding was made available through community grants, regional strategies, national partnerships and for Australian Government initiatives concerning broad strategic research and policy development. The Trust also sought to create significant partnerships between Australian, State and Local Governments and community groups.
