About this document

The Government has committed $1.5 billion to the Natural Heritage Trust to provide for the protection and rehabilitation of Australia's natural environment and to integrate the objectives of environmental protection, sustainable agriculture and natural resource management consistent with the principles of ecologically sustainable development. Administered by Environment Australia and Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Australia, the Trust is the Government's major initiative to foster partnerships between the community, industry and all levels of government to achieve the conservation, sustainable use and repair of Australia's natural environment.

The Government commissioned an extensive, independent mid-term review of the Trust to evaluate the efficiency, effectiveness and appropriateness of programs and administration in achieving the goals and objectives of the Trust. The review has concluded that the Trust has contributed significantly to the conservation, sustainable use and repair of Australia's natural environment.

The mid-term review of the Natural Heritage Trust consists of 28 separate reports containing over 600 individual recommendations.
