About this document

Under the Natural Heritage Trust, for the first time in our history, the future of the Australian environment is being considered as a whole, rather than a series of uncoordinated fragments. Of course, the whole is made up of many parts, and it is only through the cooperation of these parts that we will succeed in achieving sustainable, viable agricultural production and a healthy environment. Conserving our environment is everyone's right and responsibility.

Australia has tremendous opportunities to lead the world as a clean, green nation with unsurpassed environmental protection and ecologically sustainable rural enterprises. This will produce major economic benefits and job opportunities as well as increased exports to overseas consumers concerned about environmental practices and pollution levels in other food-producing nations.

Ultimately our long-term economic prospects are linked to environmental sustainability and the capacity to maintain fertile farmlands and pastures.

Local communities have a greater opportunity than ever before to participate in securing our future by identifying sites for environmental action and applying for funding to conserve, protect, rehabilitate and better manage local areas.

It is the Government's intention to support the commitment of the thousands of Australians who are already contributing to fixing their local environment, and to the thousands more who will be involved through new Natural Heritage Trust projects. The Trust provides a sound financial base on which effective environmental projects can be built.

This issue of Natural Heritage contains just a few examples of the many projects currently underway, and how they will contribute to improving our environment and sustainable natural resource management.

Natural Heritage Trust and related funding increases to $411 million for the next round of projects, with applications being called for in September this year. We urge all Australians to get involved and help maximise the benefits created by the Natural Heritage Trust for our environment, our rural industries and our future.
