About this document
The theme of this issue of Natural Heritage focuses largely on Australia's mountain ranges and the areas surrounding them. The United Nations declared 2002 the International Year of Mountains in recognition of the importance of mountain eco-systems in the global environment.
While ours may be the flattest continent, Australia has some of the oldest mountains in the world. From the World Heritage-listed Blue Mountains outside Sydney, to the desert ecology of outback Mt Zeil near the MacDonnell Ranges in Central Australia, our mountains are as varied as our country's climates and landscapes.
In this issue, we feature stories from places as diverse as the Atherton Tablelands in far north Queensland, sea mountains off the depths of Tasmania, South Australia's extensive Mt Lofty catchment and Western Australia's Moresby Range.
We also feature this year's winner of the Prime Minister's Award for Australian Environmentalist of the Year, NSW farmer Bill Sloane.
Our Summer issue will focus on salinity and what is being done around Australia to address one of the major issues facing communities and impacting on our natural environment, rural industries and national economy.
