About this document

The Natural Heritage Trust (the Trust) was established to help restore and conserve Australia's environment and natural resources. The current phase of the Trust runs over five years to 2006-07. The three overarching objectives and the ten priority areas of activity of the Trust are identified in the Framework for Extension of the NHT.

The Trust is structured into four Programs: Landcare, Bushcare, Rivercare and Coastcare, and investments by the Trust will be funded at three levels: national, regional and local. The linkages between the objectives, priority areas, programs and investment levels are illustrated in the diagram of the Framework for the Extension of the NHT.

This Monitoring and Evaluation Strategy relates only to the national level investment stream.

At the national level, investment will cover national priorities, addressing activities that have a national or broad-scale, rather than a regional or local, outcome. This will include Commonwealth only activities, statewide activities and those that cross State, Territory and regional boundaries. It will also address matters of direct Commonwealth jurisdiction, such as those relating to Commonwealth waters.

This document is structured to complement the Strategic Plan for National Investment under the Natural Heritage Trust , in particular:
